French Doors

FAQs

What exactly is a French door?

French doors, also called French windows, are usually a pair of glazed double doors that open from the centre on hinges, creating a wide opening between your indoor living space and the outdoors. The large fully glazed panels are designed to maximise natural light and give an open, airy feel, whether they lead to a garden, patio or balcony.

What is the difference between French doors and patio doors?

“Patio doors” is a broader term that includes sliding patio doors, bifold doors and French doors, all used as external doors to access outdoor areas. French patio doors are hinged double or triple glazed doors, while sliding and bifold doors move along a track and do not swing into the room or out onto the patio.

What is the difference between French doors and double doors?

All French doors are double doors, but not all double doors are called French doors. Double french doors are defined by their large glazed panels and classic proportions, whereas other double doors might be solid or only partially glazed.

Are French doors energy efficient?

Modern french doors typically feature double glazing and energy efficient frames that help reduce heat loss and improve insulation compared to older external doors. Many external french doors in this range are designed to achieve low U values and can be specified with double or triple glazing and Low‑E glass to improve overall energy efficiency.

How secure are external French doors?

Most external French doors use multi-point locking systems that secure the doors at several points around the frame. Toughened safety glass or laminated glass, reinforced frames and internal beading are common security features that help resist forced entry and meet building regulations.

Do French doors open inwards or outwards?

You can choose exterior French doors that open either inwards or outwards, depending on your space and preference. Outward-opening French doors are popular for patios and gardens because they save indoor floor space, provide easy access, and often improve weatherproofing.

What materials are French doors made from?

Our French doors are made from uPVC, aluminium, each offering different benefits for appearance, maintenance and energy efficiency. uPVC french doors are affordable and low maintenance, aluminium french doors give slimmer frames and a more modern look.

Are French doors or sliding doors better for small spaces?

Sliding patio doors usually work better where floor space is tight because the panels slide along a track instead of swinging on hinges. French doors suit spaces with enough clearance for the doors to open and offer a classic design with much-needed light and fresh air.
